Where Can Digital Communications Take You?
Digital communications is a broad industry that can lead to many different career opportunities. While researching current positions on SEEK, I found that many jobs involve a combination of content creation, social media, digital strategy, advertising and communication. Although the positions can have different titles, they often require similar digital and creative skills.
Social Media Manager / Digital Audience & Content Lead
The first position I looked at was a Digital Audience & Content Lead with ProVelo Cycling Group. The position focuses on managing the organisation's digital audience, content and channel growth for a national sporting league. It also involves working with content relating to athletes, teams and events. A role like this shows that social media management is not simply about posting content. It can involve developing a content strategy, growing an online audience, managing different digital channels and considering how content can strengthen an organisation's relationship with its audience.
Digital Communications and Brand Manager
Another position I found was a Digital Communications and Brand Manager with the Global CCS Institute. This is a remote position for a global climate technology think tank and focuses on managing its website, digital channels and brand. This role demonstrates how digital communications can combine creative and strategic responsibilities. Common tasks can include managing website content, maintaining digital communication channels and ensuring that an organisation presents a consistent brand across its online presence.
Digital Marketing
Digital marketing positions focus more strongly on using online platforms to promote an organisation and reach particular audiences. In the current SEEK listings, these positions include responsibilities such as managing digital campaigns across paid advertising, email, websites and social media, as well as improving growth and conversions. For example, one Digital Marketing Lead position involves managing campaigns from strategy through to execution across HubSpot, paid advertising, email and web. This demonstrates how digital marketers need both creative and analytical skills to develop campaigns and determine whether they are achieving their goals.
Media Strategist / Paid Media Specialist
The media-focused position I found was an SEM / Paid Media Specialist. This position involves managing and optimising advertising campaigns across Google Ads, Microsoft Ads, Meta and Shopping campaigns. This type of position is more focused on the strategic and advertising side of digital media. Tasks can include planning campaigns, choosing appropriate digital channels, monitoring advertising performance and making changes to improve results. It demonstrates how data and strategy are just as important as creativity within digital communications.
